The total area of the Šķirotava neighborhood is 10.057 km², which is almost twice the average area of the neighborhood in Riga. It is 1 of 6 Riga neighborhoods with an area larger than 10 km². In the late 1950s, Šķirotava began to develop into an industrial area, when the first industrial blocks with various production facilities and technical buildings were built.
